His passing following a medical emergency on Saturday, July 18, has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.
Deke dedicated much of his life to nurturing the faith of young people through Christian camping and outdoor ministry. He faithfully served in a variety of roles at Wesley Woods, including as Site Director from 2007 to 2017, where his leadership, compassion, and dedication helped shape generations of campers and staff. Later, as Executive Director of Camp Hebron, he continued his mission of creating an environment where young people could grow spiritually, build lifelong friendships, and experience the love of Christ.
Those who knew Deke remember him as a humble and approachable leader whose servant’s heart inspired everyone around him. He possessed a remarkable ability to encourage others, offer wise counsel, and make each person feel valued. Whether leading camp programs, mentoring staff, or simply sharing conversations with campers, Deke exemplified kindness, integrity, and unwavering faith.
His influence extended far beyond the camps he served. Former campers, volunteers, church partners, and colleagues continue to share heartfelt tributes celebrating his joyful spirit, steadfast leadership, and lasting impact on their lives.
